A Busy Day After a full Saturday of meeting, alfombra creation, and socializing, the delegates probably could have used a down day. However, this was Easter Sunday and their last day with their American friends. This was also the day of the alfombra processional. Although alfombras are a Guatemalan tradition of sorts, none of the delegates had ever helped create one until yesterday. They will do so next year in Tierra Nueva Dos after learning the technique from their "gringo" brothers and sisters. While the delegates attended the 11 o'clock mass, SJA committee members kept a watch on the sawdust carpet as April winds threatened to gust and blow the creation away. Many spray bottles were used to keep the sawdust down until Father George Wertin and the 8 delegates led the SJA musicians out of the gym singing "When the Saints Go Marching In". The musicians were followed by the St. Joan's congregation as 10 hours of labor was reduced to a multicolored swatch of sawdust.
Easter afternoon was spent with host families doing the ham thing and all it's American trimmings. Sunday evening marked the final time for everyone to get together. A cheese and crackers social/dance was held in Hospitality Hall. A disc jockey was hired to lead various kinds of dances that everyone enjoyed.
The SJA committee presented TNII with some Spanish/English dictionaries to help with the English classes. TNII has hired a teacher from Tierra Nueva Uno to teach for the next year at least. The teacher is good but they have little or no study materials. St. Joan's also presented each delegate with a SJA sweatshirt in a brief ceremony. During the ceremony, each delegate thanked St. Joan's, host families, and the Sister Parish committee for all of their efforts and hospitality. The Sister Parish Committees of SJA and TNII hope you can attend as many events during the delegation as possible. |
